Goals

Hey Guys!

Today I am going to touch on a topic that is very important to everyone’s success, both in business and in your personal lives.

That is the topic of goal setting.

We must set goals to achieve the things we want in life. And as a mentor of mine Dean Holland pointed out the other day, it is good to set these into

different categories. For example, set your yearly goals. Then set your quarterly goals. Then set your monthly goals. Then set your weekly goals.

And then of course, set your daily goals, or the important ‘To Do’ list.

By breaking these out into sections, it is not so overwhelming. Make lists of “Targets “not just”Tasks”. Many people fill their time doing tasks instead of having targets, probably

because they are afraid they won’t accomplish their targets and don’t want to be let down or discouraged.

But what we really need to do, and so many in this world don’t do, is start with the most important task and biggest task at the beginning of your day, instead

of doing a lot of little meaningless tasks to be able to check them all off your list as if you have accomplished a lot. If you do the big , hard task first,

you will actually get a lot more important success in your life and feel a lot better that you got it done, which in turn motivates you to do a lot more with confidence.

So before you get burned out and lose energy from a bunch of little tasks, that then keep you from doing the big tasks, reverse this thinking and do it the other way around.

I think then you will truly find satisfaction and happiness and then be able to achieve your goals much easier. So let’s do this!

Until next time,

Jim O’Brien

Setting goals across different timeframes—yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily—is a fantastic strategy for maintaining focus and managing tasks efficiently. Prioritizing the most crucial and challenging tasks at the beginning of your day, as you suggested, can significantly boost productivity and confidence, I have to admit I often do what is easiest first which is not the best way so really appreciate your post and insights. The distinction between targets and tasks is also crucial; focusing on achieving targets rather than merely completing tasks ensures that your efforts are purposeful and aligned with your overall goals. This method not only avoids burnout from less meaningful tasks but also enhances long-term satisfaction and success. Great post! look forward to implementing these ideas.

I love this, Jim! I am a goal-setter and task-writing fool, you might say! Breaking goals down into smaller, manageable pieces really does make a big difference. It’s like building a staircase to our dreams, one step at a time.

I like the idea of categorizing goals into different timeframes. It helps to create a clear path forward without feeling overwhelmed by the big picture. And you’re absolutely right about prioritizing the big tasks first. Tackling the most important and challenging task right off the bat sets a positive tone for the rest of the day. It’s all about that sense of accomplishment and momentum!

I also appreciate your insight on focusing more on targets rather than just tasks. It’s about aiming for meaningful outcomes and not just going through the motions. That mindset shift can really propel us toward greater success and fulfillment.

Your enthusiasm for helping others achieve their goals shines through your words. Keep spreading that positivity and encouragement—it’s infectious! Looking forward to your next post and more insights on navigating the journey to success.

Wishing you continued motivation and happiness on your goal-setting journey!

    Cheers!

I’m a fly by your seat kinda girl. I know what I have to do (you tube video) and all else springs from that. I like to outline tasks for the day, but usually can’t get done all I have to do! But here we are on the cusp of another week! I will cherish each moment!

Ahh, the joys of tasks and goals!
Sometimes we overthink what we have to do and yet, some other times well, we just have to put our shoulder down and get it done!
I love the fact that you touched on breaking down your tasks so that they don’t feel or seem to be overwhelming.
In one of my blog entries, I touched on the fact that I’ll schedule 3 tasks each day and once those are done, I’ll add on where necessary.
It’s been challenging sometimes to schedule what is the daily priority but once you get this going, it does become easier with time.
    Wishing you all the best!

Jim thanks for sharing your post on goal setting. I often feel as if my daily goals are more about putting out fires than completing goals. I also struggle with the long term setting of goals because as I’m learning my goals seem to often change. I suppose that’s why it is a good idea to constantly review and adjust.
